THE GIFT THAT KEEPS ON GIVING
God gave us the gift of life; it is up to us to give ourselves the gift of living well. - Voltaire
Voltaire the French writer helps us to realize how living our best life is ultimately dependent on how we decide to live our lives. As he described in his quote, our greatest gift we can give ourselves is the gift of living well. One of my mentors said it this way, “The best thing you can do for you or anyone else is add value.” It was one of the best gifts I’ve ever received as a leader. It sounds simple, but it can sometimes be a challenge. The reason why it can be a challenge is because adding value only happens when a person consistently and intentionally develops self.
There are many ways to grow, but I would like to share 3 ways to consistently and intentionally develop your skills as a leader. By doing so you will give yourself the gift the keeps on giving and discover a plethora of opportunities to succeed in any aspect of your life.
1. ATTITUDE
Attitude is everything. You have heard me say this before many times because it is that important. American Founding Father and third President of the United States Thomas Jefferson said, “Nothing can stop the man with the right mental attitude from achieving his goal; nothing on earth can help the man with the wrong mental attitude.”
When you look back on some of your finer moments and accomplishments, you will more than likely discover that you had the right attitude. This is because the right attitude builds confidence, and you need confidence to create momentum for action.
2. ACTIONS
Of course many leaders have titles, but the best leaders know they don’t need a position to be a leader. Leadership is action, not position. Just like you need the right attitude, you also need the right action.
The right action has to do with clear communication, passionately exemplifying the right work ethic, developing strong relationships, willingness to be decisive, having self-discipline, thinking outside of the box, being resourceful, constantly learning, and accepting responsibility versus making excuses.
3. ACCOUNTABILITY
The best leaders foster a culture that promotes accountability. Without accountability, even the smartest, hard-working, well-intentioned leaders fail. When leaders are able to take personal accountability, they are willing to take responsibility for their decisions, behaviors, and actions in all situations they are involved.
Accountability creates a winning environment, but it also creates opportunities to learn and grow when experiencing an unfavorable situation or outcome. Accountability is about honesty, transparency, inclusion, and proactive answerability.
As we enjoy this holiday season entering into a New Year, give yourself a gift that will give you unlimited success.
